I was just sent this interesting Titanic info:

I work for the Documents on Demand service at Congressional Information Service, Inc., a private publishing company.

Many years ago, our founder decided to gather as many Congressional publications that he could and film them. Because he did this, CIS has, with the exception of the Library of Congress, the most complete collection of Congressional publications in the world.

As part of this, and due to the interest, we are offering a bound version of the 1912 U.S. Congress Hearings entitled "'Titanic' Disaster." This book is available to anyone at a cost of $99.00, plus shipping. At almost 600 pages, we feel this price is quite reasonable. And, this publication is where people can read the comments of the survivors of the disaster.

We're trying to get the word out to as many people as possible. We will have an announcement on our Web Page (www.cispubs.com). The book will be ready to ship on or about February 10. Orders will be taken via mail, telephone, or e-mail. Payment should be by credit card (VISA, MasterCard, or American Express). Our particulars are:

CIS Documents on Demand

And, FYI - different subject. We will have a book with the original Supreme Court case and all the U.S. Congress Documents and Reports on the "Amistad" soon. Same price, $99.00.

Here is ome news on the second Titanic soundtrack:

The soundtrack for Titanic is living up to its name with yet another week of staggering sales. For the week ended February 1, the album moved 583,000 copies, according to Industry sources.

Though the figure is down from 665,000 the previous week, it's still incredibly high for an album in its eighth week and more than double Billboard's No. 2 finisher, Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love (236,000). Both the movie soundtrack and the solo album feature Dion's monster radio hit, "My Heart Will Go On."

What's even more impressive about the Titanic's chart dominance is, that with the exception of the Dion track, the album is all instrumentals. Like its sister film, the Titanic collection looks like it will sail into the record books.

It's no wonder then that a sequel soundtrack CD and possible concert tour are said to be in the works. According to Thursday's Hollywood Reporter, Golden Globe-winning composer James Horner is busily culling more sounds from the film--including the Irish folk tunes heard in steerage and the first-class chamber music--for a second Titanic disc. The album would also include new arrangements of the various themes on the first soundtrack as well as snippets of dialogue. Horner is also in negotiations to take his music on the road with a backing symphony, according to the Reporter.

There is no 5 hour long director's cut. If Cameron does decide to do a director's cut (which he hasn't yet) he will only be adding around 20-30 minutes to the original film. Titanic should hit home video around August and be Paramount's first DVD.

Titanic is #1 for week eleven! I just don't get tired reporting this.

3-3

"Titanic" earned $45 million at the foreign box office last weekend, propelling its total to $583 million and past previous champ "Jurassic Park's" $563 million.

In the process, James Cameron's epic hit $1.01 billion worldwide, becoming the first film in history to reach 10 figures. The romantic epic now looks capable of zooming as high as $750 million outside North America.

This past weekend, when it played on 5,698 screens in 48 territories, marked the seventh consecutive period in which it's pulled in more than $40 million; probably helped by the absence of strong new competition, "Titanic's" take improved in a bunch of major territories.

In France, the blockbuster nabbed $6.7 million (up 6%) for $74.3 million to date, rivaled for top market by Germany, where a $5.8 million weekend (rising 8%) pushed the score to $73.2 million.

Japan towers at $71 million after a $2.9 million weekend (spiking up 14%), the U.K. stands at $65.7 million (the third-highest grosser ever there, behind "The Full Monty" and "Jurassic Park"), Italy has $44.7 million, Spain is at $29 million and Brazil at an incredible $25.7 million.

In Australia, with $25.7 million in the till, the Leonardo DiCaprio/Kate Winslet starrer just cruised past "Babe" to rank as the second-biggest title behind "Crocodile Dundee."

Cameron Wins DGA Award

James Cameron, the moving force behind the hit movie "Titanic," has been named the year's best director of a feature film by the Directors Guild of America.

The award is often described as an important precursor to the Oscars.

The group gave the film's writer-director the award at a black-tie dinner Saturday night with the host, comedian Carl Reiner, telling Cameron: "James, you can do anything you want in this town...Talk to your lawyers and make sure you get paid."

This was a reference to Cameron's having given up his salary and profit participation as a goodwill gesture when the film went way over budget and wound up costing about $200 million.

Now in its 12th weekend of release, "Titanic" has become the first film ever to gross more than $1 billion worldwide, a figure that includes an estimated $449.5 million from the North American box office.

It is vying for a record-tying 14 Academy Awards at the Oscars on March 23. Last Tuesday, "Titanic's" producers, Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini and Cameron, took home the producer of the year award at the Producers Guild of America's annual awards gala.

Titanic is on top for the 12th straight week! But will it beat-out The Man in the Iron Mask? Read my report to find out.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - ``Titanic'' made an estimated $7 million tonight, pushing it past ``Star Wars'' to become the top domestic money-earner of all time. The shipwreck saga had earned $458.2 million going into today. The $465 million total surpasses the $461 million record set by ``Star Wars.'' But if you count admissions to the 1939 classic ``Gone With the Wind'' in today's dollars, that movie would have made $1.29 billion in ticket sales.

You just knew "Titanic" had to lose power overseas at some stage. Some collapse: James Cameron's epic grossed a still-hefty $37 million in 52 territories last weekend, driving the international total to a dizzying $704.7 million.

That halted the unprecedented run of eight consecutive weekends of $40 million-plus, but chances are the blockbuster will get a considerable uplift from next Monday's Academy Awards.

The maritime disaster picture is headed for upwards of $850 million abroad (it has already made $471 million in North America); just how far up is anyone's guess, but a fistful of major Oscars conceivably could send this phenomenon towards $1 billion.

Slugging it out for "Titanic's" top territory are France with $88.5 million in the till, and Germany's $87.3 million. In Japan, it has raised $86 million. In the U.K., the ocean liner steamed past "Jurassic Park" to $80.5 million, now standing as that market's second-highest grosser ever and fast closing in on "The Full Monty's" $85 million.

Other totals include Italy's $51.7 million, Spain's $32.3 million and Australia's $28.4 million, where it's now certain to beat "Crocodile Dundee" to become the No. 1 title in history.

Cameron May Reap $50-$100 Million Payday

Days after proclaiming he was "king of the world!" following a record-tying Oscar haul, "Titanic" writer/director/producer James Cameron is on course for a payday of up to $100 million to make up for the revenue he lost when he surrendered his directing and producing fees and his profit participation on the film.

Sources said proposals are in the works that will bring Cameron compensation between $50 million and $100 million. In addition to differing reports on the amount, some sources said Cameron would get a lump sum, and others said he'd participate in a revenue-sharing formula tied to the performance of the film -- which would keep growing as the film enters new ancillary revenue streams.

Sources at the studio level said a proposal was still being ironed out between financiers Fox and Paramount that would restore what Cameron gave up.

Although his per-picture fee is well behind George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, Cameron is now in a position to reap one of the highest director paydays ever.

Lucas has made a fortune from his "Star Wars" films because he owns the sequel negatives and merchandising rights. Spielberg has a complicated gross percentage deal that has earned him as much as 50% of the gross when his films reach a certain box office level. As an equal partner with Universal, Spielberg's take from "Jurassic Park" has been estimated at more than $200 million, after direct costs, interest and distribution fees were deducted.

"We're talking, and I'm optimistic that something fair will be worked out, but certainly there's no confirmed deal of any specific value at this time," said Rae Sanchini, president of Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment production company.

Fox chairman Peter Chernin has been negotiating with Cameron for several weeks, and, with the approval of Paramount, could sign off on a Cameron proposal quickly.

The proposal getting the most lip service was described as a one-time makegood payment that would settle matters with Cameron, no matter how much more money "Titanic" makes -- and it's grossed $1.25 billion worldwide so far. But some feel he's lucky to be given anything after surrendering a gross position worth between $50 million and $75 million.

The deal, said sources, was not tied to any future film that Cameron will direct or produce at Fox. Cameron's expected to make his next film at the studio, with "Spider-Man," a remake of "Planet of the Apes" and a "True Lies" sequel all prime candidates. A no-strings settlement makes some sense, since Cameron's payday would have to be approved and partly funded by the film's co-financier Paramount, which does not have a future film commitment with the Fox-based helmer.

Fox, according to sources, already has paid Cameron his writing and producing fees for his next project at the studio, whatever that might be.

With "Titanic," Cameron put himself at the mercy of the studios when he waived his directing and producing fees, plus his entire backend at a time when the film's $100 million budget was becoming a distant memory. Cameron has said he made the no-strings concession to show nervous Fox executives they wouldn't be the only ones suffering. He did, however, keep a reported $1.5 million fee for writing the screenplay.

Though the box office has been bursting since the film opened, sources said Cameron has refused to make a direct approach to either Fox or Paramount to regain his backend. His decision to give back his backend isn't that surprising when one considers that he's the same guy who early in his career sold for $1 his half-share of ownership in "The Terminator" to his producing partner and future ex-wife Gale Anne Hurd.

Cameron Getting Titanic Payday

Mel Brooks said it best in History of the World: "It's good to be king."

Just ask ruling King of the World James Cameron. The Oscar-winning director is finally about to get paid for helming Titanic.

Cameron, who gave up his directing fee to get the film made (he only got $1.5 million for penning the script), is about to get a $100 million-plus paycheck, the Hollywood Reporter says.

Quoting unnamed sources at the two studios behind the film, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, the Reporter says the director agreed to a deal Friday that will get him a hefty chunk of the film's gross, around 10 percent.

Although the check won't be cut until the ship flick is played out in theaters, Cameron should be taking home in excess of $100 mil. So far, Titanic has shattered worldwide box office records, grossing more than $1 billion around the globe.

Last May, Cameron told the Los Angeles Times he took on the story of the maritime disaster as a work of "pure passion." And when the budget climbed, he said he told Fox he would waive his producer and director fees, as well as "any economic participation in the revenues" from the movie to show, "I take responsibilty for my films when the chips are down, just as I take credit when they do well."

But Fox decided once Titanic became profitable, Cameron should be rewarded. Paramount agreed. Earlier reports had the filmmaker getting between $50 and $75 mil for his Titanic duties.

Of course there's a ulterior motive behind Fox's magnanimity. The studio is hoping to get the distribution rights to future Cameron flicks, like the big-screen Spider-Man now in development.

It had to happen eventually. Titanic was beaten by Lost In Space last weekend. LIS has over $20 million and Titanic was second with $11 million. Read my full report here.
